How to water your orchids correctly

Orchids are as elegant as they are delicate. Their beauty can last for a long time if they receive proper care — and one of the most important aspects is watering.

Unlike other plants, orchids do not tolerate excess water; that’s why knowing the different watering methods is key to keeping them healthy and blooming.

1. Immersion Method (the most recommended)

One of the most practical and safest methods, especially if your orchid is in a transparent pot with bark or moss substrate.

How to do it:

• Place the pot inside a container with water (without covering the leaves or stem).

• Leave it submerged for 10 to 15 minutes.

• Remove it and let the excess water drain completely before returning it to its place.

• Ideal to do once a week or when the substrate feels dry.

2. Direct Watering Method

If you prefer a faster method, you can water the orchid directly from above.

How to do it:

• Pour room-temperature water slowly over the substrate.

• Avoid wetting the flowers or the center of the plant.

• Let the excess water drain through the holes in the pot.

This method requires more control: if water remains trapped, the roots may rot.

 3. Gentle Shower Method

This simulates tropical rain — the orchid’s natural environment.

How to do it:

• Place the plant in the shower or sink.

• Let warm water run over the substrate (not the flowers) for about 30 seconds.

• Allow it to drain completely before returning it to its place.

It’s ideal for revitalizing the plant and cleaning dust off the leaves.

4. Ice Cube Method

Some people use ice cubes to provide slow hydration.

How to do it:

• Place 2 or 3 ice cubes on the substrate, avoiding direct contact with the roots.

• Wait for them to melt completely.

This method is not ideal for cold climates or all orchid species.

General Tips:

• Use chlorine-free or rainwater when possible.

• Don’t water by routine: touch the substrate first — if it’s still moist, wait a few more days.

• Avoid stagnant water in saucers or bases.

• Water preferably in the morning, so the plant dries well during the day.
