Sago palms, commonly known as cycads or Cycas revoluta, are striking plants admired for their rigid leaves, sculptural appearance and ancient lineage. Although they look like palms, they are not related: cycads belong to an evolutionary group older than dinosaurs. Their extremely slow growth and resilience make them ideal for anyone seeking a strong, long-lasting ornamental plant.

This guide provides everything you need to care for a sago palm properly, especially in humid regions such as Buenos Aires, where excess moisture, long rainy seasons and low winter light can affect its health.

Light
The sago palm needs plenty of bright light, ideally 3 to 6 hours of direct sun per day. In low-light environments, the leaves become longer, weaker and lighter in color. North-facing windows are ideal in the Southern Hemisphere. Grow lights can help during winter.

Watering
Cycads tolerate drought extremely well but suffer from overwatering. Water only when the soil is completely dry. In humid climates, this may mean watering every 15–25 days in summer and every 30–45 days in winter. Never leave standing water in the saucer.

Soil
Use an airy, fast-draining mix: 40% potting mix, 30% coarse sand, 20% perlite and 10% pumice or gravel. Avoid compact soils that retain moisture.

Temperature
They prefer 20–30 °C but tolerate light cold. What harms them most is cold + humidity, so protect them from prolonged rain and poorly ventilated spaces in winter.

Fertilizing
Apply a balanced fertilizer every 30–45 days during spring and summer. Stop fertilizing in autumn and winter.

Pot selection
Terracotta pots work best since they help excess moisture evaporate. Choose a heavy pot if placed outdoors.

Pests
Watch for mealybugs, scale insects and fungal issues. Clean small infestations with isopropyl alcohol. Ensure good ventilation and avoid overwatering.
